DuraFlex Crown Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Crown Repair: The Cherry Hill Owner’s Guide

DuraFlex crown repair in Cherry Hill typically runs $280-$480 installed, and we stock the compatible refractory components on our trucks for same-day completion in most cases. The crown sits at the very top of your chimney, sealing the flue tiles and masonry from water intrusion, and when it cracks, water enters the stack within days, not weeks. Most Cherry Hill homeowners notice the problem after a hard freeze-thaw cycle, which is why we see a surge of calls from Barclay Farm and Kingston Estates each late February.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex crowns are not universal. The part you need depends on whether your system uses DuraFlex’s standard refractory crown assembly or the upgraded stainless-reinforced version sold for 6-inch and 8-inch round flue applications. Check the metal tag on your chimney’s cleanout door or the stamped code on the existing crown’s underside, usually visible from the roof edge. The prefix “DF-” followed by a four-digit number tells us the series.

We carry both OEM DuraFlex crowns and the HeatShield-compatible refractory overlay system, which bonds to the existing crown substrate if the structural shell is still sound. For older DuraFlex 5000-series units, the OEM crown has been discontinued, so we fabricate a matching replacement from Copperfield components that meet the same ASTM C199 spec. In Cherry Hill’s freeze-thaw climate, we generally recommend the thicker 2-inch crown over the standard 1.5-inch, even where the original spec calls for less. It costs more upfront and fails less often.

Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing

  • Hairline cracks spreading across the crown surface. These start as surface crazing from thermal cycling, then widen as water freezes inside them. In Cherry Hill, a single winter can turn a hairline into a quarter-inch gap that channels water straight down the flue.
  • Water stains on the ceiling near the fireplace. This means water has already penetrated the crown, run down the flue liner, and found a gap at the smoke chamber or thimble. The crown is the entry point, but the damage travels.
  • Chunks of concrete or refractory material in the firebox or cleanout. The crown is shedding its surface layer, usually from freeze-thaw spalling accelerated by de-icing salts carried in wind-driven rain across Cherry Hill’s flatter rooflines.
  • Rust streaks down the exterior brick below the crown. Water pooling on a cracked crown leaches minerals and rust from the flue liner or brick ties. The streaks are cosmetic evidence of a structural leak that has been active for one to three years.
  • Damp, musty odor from the fireplace in summer. Even without visible water, a compromised crown lets humid air into the flue, where it condenses on cooler surfaces and breeds mold in the smoke chamber. Cherry Hill’s July humidity makes this unmistakable.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range
DuraFlex crown assessment + Level-2 camera inspection $89-$149
Standard refractory crown replacement (1.5 in.) $280-$360
Upgraded refractory crown replacement (2 in., freeze-thaw rated) $360-$480
Stainless crown reinforcement band (where flue gapping exists) $120-$180 additional
HeatShield crown resurfacing (existing shell sound) $220-$320

The range depends on roof access, whether we need to set up staging on a steep pitch, and what the camera reveals below the crown. We do not quote crown work without a camera inspection, because a crown that looks cracked from the roofline may be protecting a flue that is already separating from the liner. Our estimate is the number on the invoice. The 90-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation, and the DuraFlex-compatible materials carry their own manufacturer’s coverage against defects.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check for crown damage from the ground with binoculars, looking for cracks, missing chunks, or discoloration. You can also open the cleanout door and shine a flashlight up the flue to spot debris or water staining. What you should not do is climb onto the roof to patch the crown yourself.

Crown repair involves working at height on a surface that is already structurally compromised. The refractory mortar used for proper bonding sets under specific temperature and humidity conditions, and in Cherry Hill’s variable spring weather, a DIY patch often fails before the season turns. More critically, a crown that looks repairable from above may be concealing flue liner damage that only a camera inspection reveals. We have replaced too many homeowner patches that sealed water inside the stack and accelerated the damage they were meant to stop.

Call (856) 543-2929 and we will walk through what you are seeing. If it sounds like crown failure, we book the inspection, show you the photos, and give you a price before any work begins.
